Our approach to how our client’s money is invested is deeply rooted in Modern Portfolio Theory, MPT for short. Simply stated this theory states that for every level of risk a investor is willing to take there can be one optimized efficient portfolio that maximizes their return an that level of risk. Now in the real world numerous factors such as economic growth, level and trend of interest rates, monetary policy, world affairs, and fiscal policy all impact asset classes (domestic equity, fixed income, international equity, etc.) differently.

The result is unique performance tendencies that are observable over time and measurable in the form of correlation. For example, small capitalization stocks may perform better in one year to offset the mediocre returns for bonds during the period. The next year real estate and international stocks could offset the lagging domestic stock market. The idea is to combine two or more risky assets and create and portfolio with less expected risk than the risk of the individual assets.

As a result, each portfolio from very conservative to maximum growth seeks to provide the optimum level of
risk at a given level of return and vice versa.
